Design
and Engineering Experience.
James worked as an Engineering Technician for fifteen years before receiving
his BSE degree. He has worked full-time his entire career, earning his Bachelor's
and Master's by attending evening classes at UAH.
While still an undergraduate student at UAH
he was responsible for the redesign of test sets for US Army hardware.
After receiving the BSE degree, James Lewis was employed by Computer Systems Technology, Inc. in Huntsville, AL where he developed the concept for a computerized egg-scale (Yep, you heard it right!) for a large poultry breeder. James produced the entire analog/digital electronic portion of the design and was involved with the mechanical design and packaging of the product.
In 1996 CST made a decision to no longer pursue commercial product development.
While working on his Master's thesis, James Lewis was introduced to FPGAs and other large scale Programmable Logic Devices. A PLD was used to realize and test his theory of a Boolean Digital Multiplier. James has received a patent on his high-speed multiplier. The Multiplier that was designed as the core of the thesis produces the result of a four-bit by four-bit multiply with only two gate delays (theoretically the fastest performance possible).
After leaving CST, James was involved in the digital systems design at SCI and VMIC corporations in Huntsville. His design work for these employers included board level design, extensive PLD designs, bit sync generators, bus interface logic (VMEbus), high-speed timing and waveform generation, A/D conversion, and processor board design.
In 1991 James and Beth Lewis founded Lewis Innovative Technologies to produce board-level designs and custom components. Since then, LIT has produced numerous designs, providing services from PCB layout to entire board-level systems.
Working through LIT has afforded James opportunities to participate in design work that would not have been available otherwise. Through LIT James has designed Touch-Tone decoder devices, stepper motor controllers, an electronic stop watch, data encoding/decoding devices, and devices for HAM radio and Cable TV markets.
In
1998 James received his Professional Engineer's (PE) registration in Electrical
Engineering from the State of Alabama and entered into full time engineering
consultation.
